Mopungchuket, anAo village. This village lying near Impur the permanent Mission Centre of Ao Baptist ArogoMungdang (ABAM) is making attempts to revive the ancient Ao culture. You will find ‘Morungs’ which are carved Time Pillars. There are ancient artifacts preserved in the village museum and a 100 years old church. Thereafter, take a 30 min village walk where you will find traditional houses. During the day the people of the village work in their paddy fields that surround the village. These paddy field fields are about 1-2 km from the village. However, during your village walks you would come across children and the old folk of the village.
After your visit you proceed to Chuchuyimlang that is 33 km fromMokokchung and takes approx 1 hr drive. This is an Ao Village that is known to spectacularly celebrate the Moatsu Festival with dance, folksongs, indigenous games and tribal chants in the first week of May every year. Here you visit an Ao Museum that houses Ao artifacts. The construction of this museum and its maintenance is a village community effort. After breakfast visit Khonoma village ( 20kms / 01 hrs) explore the area and then we drive back to Kohima and after lunch we proceed further to other Angami villages, evening leisure at hotel.
Khonoma village has been declared as the first “Green village of the country” because of the initiative taken by the village to stop hunting, logging and forest fire. The village has also taken an odd step by declaring 27 sqkms of its territory as "Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary" (KNCTS). Shillong was a small village until 1864, when it became the new civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia hills. It remained the summer capital of Eastern Bengal and Assam for many years. In 1874, on the formation of Assam as a Chief Commissioner’s Province, it was chosen as the capital of the new administration. An earthquake destroyed the city in 1897, necessitating its complete rebuilding. In January 1972, Shillong became the capital of the newly formed state of Meghalaya. Overnight at Camp.
